Introspection Black & White (1978-2008)
German Vinogradov
11.12.08 - 31.01.09

Most of the arguments in the contemporary debates on the issue of «body-mind» are based on assumptions that are supported by introspection* (self-examination) or inward mapping. Lets consider, for example, proof of the theory of Jackson.

Maria, who is locked in a black and white room and who never felt other color sensations, has examined the existing physical knowledge about colors. Nonetheless, Jackson argues, that when she leaves the room and sees a ripe tomato for the first time, she learns a few new facts concerning the red color. Thus, there are phenomena that go beyond physicalistic ** confirmation (Jackson 1982).

Either way, this argument had a great success in proving the falsity of physicalism. But in our case, there’s another important question: how can we judge the veracity of Jackson’s allegations? What new knowledge of color will Mary get, when she leaves the room? What we should do is to imagine ourselves in the Mary’s place and decide what will be our position of <sensuous> perception when we exit the room. In other words, we raise a kind of introspective display. Introspection (self-observation) sui generic continues to play a key role in this and other evidence of theories relating to the «body-mind» problem.

* Introspection (from latin introspecto – look inside) – is a method for an in-depth psychological study, which is to observe its own mental processes – acts of its own activity: the individual thoughts, images, feelings, emotions, acts of thinking as the activities of the mind, which structures consciousness.  No tools or standards are used in introspection.

** Physicalismis one of the concepts of logical positivism, which was developed by Karnap, Neyrat etc. The supporters of physikalism put the value of any provision of any science in dependence on its ability to translate it to the language of physics, « physicals ». Sentences that do not contain such an operation shall be regarded as deprived of their scientific meaning.
